NEW ORLEANS – September is National Library Card Sign-up Month, and the New Orleans Public Library is celebrating with a new Culture Pass Partner. Started on Sept. 1, library cardholders can reserve free admission to the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum through the program.
Since the 1950’s, the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum has been acquiring, preserving and documenting the history of pharmacy and medicines, with a particular focus on New Orleans and Louisiana.
With the addition of the Pharmacy Museum, the program allows cardholders above the age of 18 and living in Orleans Parish to access free entry to a total of 16 museums and attractions. New Orleans Public Library Executive Director and City Librarian Emily Painton said the Pharmacy Museum adds a unique experience to the popular Library service.
“The Culture Pass program is one of our most in-demand offerings, and it’s always wonderful to expand on a service that our community has expressed so much love for,” said Painton. “The program was created to break down barriers and provide New Orleanians access to information, within or outside the Library’s walls. The Pharmacy Museum is a truly original attraction that offers visitors a walk through time, science, and New Orleans history, and it aligns directly with that goal.”
Located at 514 Chartres St., the museum occupies a historic landmark – a classic French Quarter townhouse, constructed in the 1820’s. The home was the apothecary and residence of Louis J. Dufilho, Jr., the first licensed pharmacist in the United States.
Elizabeth Sherman, Executive Director of the New Orleans Pharmacy Museum, said they are thrilled to be the newest Culture Pass partner.
“We look forward to welcoming more local residents to the museum to explore our two floors of exhibits and learn about the fascinating history of 19th Century pharmacy, medicine and healthcare,” said Sherman.
Tickets for all Culture Pass partners must be booked in advance. Passes to the Pharmacy Museum allow admission for up to four people. Visit culturepass.nolalibrary.org for more information and to reserve your pass.
Since 1987, the American Library Association has hosted Library Card Sign-up month to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, libraries across the country unite in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card. In addition to adding a new Culture Pass partner, the New Orleans Public Library is celebrating by giving away free canvas tote bags to everyone who signs up or renews their Library card.
