BASTROP — Metairie-based professional liability insurer LAMMICO has named Morehouse General Hospital in Bastrop, Louisiana, the recipient of its 11th Annual Patient Safety Award and Grant, recognizing the hospital’s efforts to reduce pressure injuries through improved prevention protocols, staff education and wound care practices.
The 2025-2026 Patient Safety Award and Grant centered on skin and pressure injury reduction. Although hospitals, long-term care facilities and clinicians have been diligently working for years to prevent pressure injuries, their prevalence persists. For patients, pressure injuries can be debilitating and painful. For healthcare facilities, they can result in litigation.
Grant applicants completed a skin and pressure injury course in LAMMICO’s learning management system. The course focused on risk factors, skin care and actions that can be taken to prevent pressure injuries.
By demonstrating the greatest reduction in healthcare facility-acquired pressure rates resulting from its pressure injury prevention and treatment efforts, and its participation in this risk management and patient safety education, Morehouse General Hospital was awarded:
- $10,000 grant for nursing professional development
- One-year Risk Manager membership to the American Society for Health Care Risk Management (ASHRM)
The team at Morehouse General Hospital implemented a hospital-wide wound care improvement initiative which included standardized pressure injury prevention protocols; structured skin assessment; and staff education to support consistent practice across all patient care areas. This initiative resulted in a reduction in wound care-related injuries and improved patient outcomes.
Winston Medical Center Also Recognized
Winston Medical Center’s Turning Point geriatric/psychiatry unit in Louisville, Mississippi, is the second-place participant of the Patient Safety Award and Grant. A grant of $5,000 for nursing professional development and a one-year Risk Manager membership to ASHRM was presented to this hospital in recognition of this honor.
The Turning Point unit implemented a patient safety initiative focused on skin integrity and wound prevention. Through staff engagement, education and ongoing quality improvement efforts, the initiative resulted in a reduction in wound care-related injuries and supported improved patient outcomes.
