NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans is reminding senior residents that qualifying households may be eligible for a reduced sanitation charge of only $10 per month.
The reduced sanitation charge is available to residents 65-years or older and whose income is below federal poverty guidelines.
The senior fee is granted for 12 months at a time and eligible residents must apply and renew their exemption annually.
WHO MAY QUALIFY?
Residents may qualify for the Reduced Sanitation Charge if they:
- Are 65 years of age or older;
- Are the head of household; and
- Have a household income that does not exceed federal low-income guidelines.
The City is highlighting the program as part of its ongoing effort to ensure that the sanitation fee reset considers the needs of New Orleans residents, particularly those living on fixed or limited incomes.
“Throughout this process, we have been focused on making sure we address the longstanding problems in our sanitation system while also recognizing that every dollar matters to New Orleans families,” said Mayor Helena Moreno. “Our seniors have contributed to this city for decades, and we want to make sure those who qualify for this protection know that it is available to them.”
As approved by the City Council a sanitation reset takes effect October 1. After that time, curbside collection will cost $32.25 per month for residential addresses.
The reset is part of a broader effort to establish a more accurate, accountable and financially sustainable sanitation system after years of underfunding and outdated service records.
Residents applying will need to provide documentation verifying their age, household income and eligibility for the federal low-income standard.
