Wendell Pierce Returns for “They Fight” Premiere in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANSThe New Orleans Film Society and Andscape will present the New Orleans premiere of “They Fight,” starring New Orleans native Wendell Pierce and actor André Holland, on Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Orpheum Theater.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the film will begin at 7 p.m. The screening is free and open to the public, but advance registration is required. Pierce is expected to attend the hometown premiere.

Written and directed by filmmaker Sheldon Candis, “They Fight” uses the world of boxing to explore mentorship, perseverance and the importance of having someone willing to stand in a young person’s corner.

The film’s message is especially relevant in New Orleans, where coaches, educators, faith leaders and community organizations play an essential role in guiding the city’s youth. Athletic, recreational and arts programs provide more than activities. They offer discipline, stability, encouragement and a sense of belonging.

Pierce has maintained a strong connection to New Orleans throughout his distinguished career in film, television and theater. Beyond his work as an actor, he has remained an advocate for the city and its residents, frequently using his platform to highlight New Orleans culture and community concerns.

His return offers residents an opportunity to celebrate a native son while recognizing the mentors and community leaders whose work continues to shape the next generation.

The screening is part of the Orpheum Theater’s Free Summer Movie Series and NOFS/365, the New Orleans Film Society’s year-round programming initiative. The free presentation will allow families, students, aspiring filmmakers and other community members to experience the film together at one of the city’s historic venues.

For young New Orleanians interested in acting and filmmaking, Pierce’s homecoming also provides a visible example of what is possible. His career reflects the global influence of New Orleans talent and the importance of remaining connected to the community that helped make that success possible.

“They Fight” is ultimately more than a boxing story. It is a story about community, opportunity and the lasting difference one committed adult can make in the life of a young person.
