NEW ORLEANS – The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans (TWTC) announced its 2027 Season Twelve, marking the beginning of the company’s second decade with a vision that celebrates not only Williams’ extraordinary body of work, but also the profound influence he continues to have on American theatre.
The season features Tennessee Williams’ rarely produced Stairs to the Roof, Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Angels in America: Millennium Approaches, a bold immersive reimagining of Suddenly Last Summer, and the launch of Williams Under the Oaks, a new free outdoor collaboration with the Tennessee Williams & New Orleans Literary Festival.
For the first time in the company’s history, TWTC will also expand its artistic programming by occasionally exploring playwrights whose work was profoundly influenced by Tennessee Williams, beginning with Tony Kushner’s landmark masterpiece Angels in America.
“For more than a decade, we’ve dedicated ourselves to preserving, producing, and reimagining the extraordinary works of Tennessee Williams,” said Nick Shackleford, founding co-artistic director and producer. “As we begin our second decade, we’re asking a larger question: What is Tennessee Williams’ legacy? Not simply the remarkable body of work he left behind, but the generations of artists he inspired. Tennessee Williams transformed American theatre, and we believe there is no better way to honor that legacy than by occasionally exploring the playwrights whose work continues the artistic revolution he began.”

Few playwrights transformed American theatre more profoundly than Tennessee Williams. His revolutionary approach to language, psychological realism, sexuality, and the complexity of the human experience forever changed what American theatre could be. As TWTC enters its second decade, the company will continue producing Williams’ masterpieces while occasionally exploring artists whose work reflects his enduring artistic legacy.

Stairs to the Roof

One of Tennessee Williams’ earliest and most enchanting works, Stairs to the Roof celebrates hope, imagination, and the courage to dream beyond the ordinary. Rarely produced yet astonishingly relevant, this luminous theatrical fable follows a young executive who abandons the machinery of modern life and embarks on a surreal journey toward freedom, love, and purpose.
Angels in America: Millennium Approaches

Summer 2027
Widely regarded as one of the greatest American plays ever written, Tony Kushner’s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece explores love, loss, faith, identity, politics, and the AIDS epidemic through one of the most ambitious works ever created for the American stage. TWTC’s production will be presented in collaboration with Tulane University’s Department of Jewish Studies, with additional partnerships to be announced surrounding HIV/AIDS, public health, politics, government, and community engagement.
The company also announced its intention to complete Kushner’s epic with Angels in America: Perestroika during the summer of 2028.
Suddenly Last Summer

One of Williams’ most haunting masterpieces, Suddenly Last Summer will be completely reimagined as an immersive theatrical experience. Audiences will be seated both onstage and off inside a haunting sanitarium where memory, nightmare, and reality collide. Featuring an intimate cast and an evocative fusion of projection, sound, and media design, this bold new production promises one of the most daring theatrical experiences in TWTC’s history.
Williams Under the Oaks
Season Twelve also introduces Williams Under the Oaks, a free outdoor Lagniappe event presented in collaboration with the Tennessee Williams & New Orleans Literary Festival. Held beneath New Orleans’ iconic live oaks, the event will feature performances, readings, music, and theatrical celebration before audiences continue together to the city’s annual Stella Shouting Contest.
