NEW ORLEANS – InspireNOLA Charter Schools welcomed over 2,000 students, educators and community leaders for its Inspire the City Back to School Student Rally, a celebration organizers says was designed to recognize student achievement, inspire continued excellence and set the tone for a successful new school year. This year’s rally featured a special appearance by 49th Vice President Kamala D. Harris, who spoke to students and participated in an engaging conversation focused on leadership, perseverance, education and the importance of believing in their own potential.
Held as InspireNOLA students begin another year of learning and growth, the rally provided an opportunity for students to come together, celebrate their accomplishments and hear from leaders who encourage them to dream bigger and pursue their goals.
Harris addressed the students during the program and joined a student conversation, creating an opportunity for young people to engage directly with a nationally recognized leader and share their perspectives, questions and aspirations.
“Our students deserve to dream boldly and see what’s possible when they believe in themselves,” said Jamar McKneely, CEO of InspireNOLA Charter Schools. “Having Vice President Kamala Harris join us for the Inspire the City Student Rally gave our students an incredible opportunity to ask questions, be inspired and start the new school year with purpose. We are excited to see all they will accomplish this year.”
The rally also featured a diverse group of community, business and civic leaders who shared their experiences and perspectives with InspireNOLA students. Hosted by acclaimed vocalist and educator Tonya Boyd Cannon, the program included InspireNOLA CEO Jamar McKneely, Congressman Troy Carter, former Congressman Cedric Richmond, Mayor Helena Moreno, Pastor Jonathan Everett, Sheriff Michelle Woodfork, and InspireNOLA students and youth leaders: Edna Karr’s Ja’Ryan Berryhill, McDonogh 35’s Makayla Washington and Eleanor McMain’s Nylah Dyer and Ja’Mia Washington.
Students also heard from a Black philanthropy panel featuring James Mayes, owner of EMLINE; Dook Chase IV, owner of Chapter IV; Courtney Thomas, Vice President of Communications for the Greater New Orleans Foundation; and Dr. Shondra Williams, CEO and President of InclusivCare.
The Inspire the City Student Rally serves as a signature moment for InspireNOLA, bringing together students and the broader community around a shared message of possibility and purpose. The event reinforces the network’s belief that when students are surrounded by high expectations, meaningful opportunities, and people who believe in them, they can achieve extraordinary things.
With more than 5,000 students across seven New Orleans public charter schools, InspireNOLA continues to emphasize academic excellence, leadership, character and opportunities that allow students to discover and pursue their passions.
