NEW ORLEANS – The Garden District Book Shop announced that author and LSU professor Jonathan Earle will be at the shop Aug. 7 to celebrate the release of his new analysis “He Has The People: Abraham Lincoln and the Election of 1860,” a bold new reading of the most pivotal election in American history.
The shop shares: Drawing on long-neglected documents, Earle captures the full drama of the race: how Lincoln outmaneuvered Democrat Stephen Douglas and presumptive Republican favorite William Henry Seward. Lincoln and his circle ran a brilliant campaign, harnessing Northern anger, rising antislavery sentiment, and deep fractures within both the Democratic Party and the country itself.
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, but interested parties are encouraged to RSVP and reserve their copies of He Has The People ahead of time on Eventbrite.
AUG. 8 | GOOD DAY, LOUISIANA CHILDREN’S MUSEUM | 11 a.m.
On Aug. 8 at 11 a.m., local author and illustrator Shannon Kelly Atwater will be at The Garden District Book Shop to read her latest book “Good Day, Louisiana Children’s Museum” for Saturday Story Time.
This collaboratively illustrated board book pays homage to the beloved Louisiana Children’s Museum. This book was created during Shannon’s time as artist in residence at LCM during the Fall of 2025 and features over 170 contributors (named on the back). Many hands touched the pages of this book and it was a very special and fun project!
AUG. 11 | THE DESERVING | 6 p.m.
Author Elizabeth Vartkessian will be at The Garden District Book Shop for the release for her debut book “The Deserving: What the Lives of the Condemned Reveal About American Justice.” In an era of dangerous rollbacks and record-high executions, The Deserving is an inspiring argument for true rehabilitation replacing retribution.
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. Sister Helen Prejean, who penned the foreword, and Rose Vines will join Vartkessian in discussion. The event is free and open to the public, but space is limited so interested parties are encouraged to RSVP and reserve their copies ahead of time on Eventbrite.

The Garden District Book Shop will welcome bestselling author K.F. Breene to the shop to celebrate her latest book “Born in Fire,” the first book in her new Vampire Nights book series.
