NOPD Drone Team Provides Critical Real-Time Intelligence During French Quarter Transformer Fire

NEW ORLEANS — As thousands of residents and visitors celebrated the Fourth of July holiday and Essence Festival weekend, the New Orleans Police Department had additional officers and drone teams already deployed throughout the city to enhance public safety.

That proactive deployment proved invaluable Saturday when a transformer caught fire in the French Quarter.

One of NOPD’s drone pilots, already providing aerial support in the area, immediately redirected the drone to the scene within seconds of the incident being dispatched. A second drone quickly joined the response, providing incident commanders with continuous live video and infrared thermal imaging as firefighters worked to contain the fire.

The aerial perspective allowed officers to monitor heat beneath the roadway, helping determine whether the fire remained contained or was spreading underground. Drone crews also assisted Entergy by documenting the extent of the power outage after electricity was shut off, providing valuable information as restoration efforts began.

By providing a live view from above, the Drone Team enhanced situational awareness, reduced the need for personnel in hazardous areas, and supported NOPD, NOFD, and utility crews as they safely managed the incident.

“Technology doesn’t replace our officers or firefighters; it gives them better information to make better decisions,” NOPD Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said. “Because our Drone Team was already deployed supporting Fourth of July and Essence Festival operations, they were able to provide real-time intelligence almost immediately. That information enhanced firefighter safety, supported our partner agencies, and helped us protect the public.”

The incident highlights how NOPD continues to leverage technology as a force multiplier, strengthening emergency response, improving coordination among first responders, and enhancing public safety during both planned events and unexpected emergencies.
