NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Helena Moreno announced the launch of the Canal Street Renaissance Initiative, a comprehensive, multi-phase effort to restore Canal Street though public safety, infrastructure, economic development, and beautification. The initiative, established through Executive Order, creates a coordinated, long-term strategy bringing together city departments, business leaders, and community partners under a single vision and unified leadership to restore one of America’s premier commercial corridors.
The initiative will roll out in three phases, beginning immediately with operational improvements to enhance public safety, cleanliness, lighting, infrastructure, code enforcement, and quality of life. Future phases will focus on attracting new investment, activating retail and cultural spaces, improving the pedestrian experience, and unlocking long-term redevelopment opportunities along the corridor.
Phase One: Immediate Action
The first phase begins immediately and focuses on visible improvements that residents, businesses, and visitors will experience, including:
· Enhanced public safety coordination and quality-of-life enforcement.
· Comprehensive lighting repairs and infrastructure improvements.
· Enhanced code enforcement targeting noncompliant properties.
· Business and stakeholder engagement to support economic revitalization opportunities.
· Quality of life improvements.
Future Phases
Subsequent phases will focus on:
· Improving pedestrian safety and traffic operations.
· Expanding arts, entertainment, and cultural programming.
· Recruiting new retailers and creating incentives to fill vacant storefronts.
· Coordinated branding and marketing of Canal Street.
· Activating upper-floor residential, hotel, and office spaces.
· Advancing major redevelopment opportunities and establishing a sustainable governance structure to ensure long-term success.
A key component of the initiative is the appointment of Sayde Finkel as the Canal Street Renaissance Director, who will oversee implementation, coordinate efforts across city departments and partner organizations, establish priorities and performance metrics, engage stakeholders, and provide regular progress updates.
“Canal Street is more than a roadway, it’s the front door to New Orleans and one of the most recognizable streets in America,” said Mayor Helena Moreno. “For too long, everyone has agreed on the challenges, but no one has been responsible for bringing all of the pieces together. Today that changes. This initiative creates a clear strategy, strong accountability, and a dedicated coordinator within City Hall to ensure the work gets done to restore Canal Street as a vibrant destination for residents, businesses, and visitors.”
“Canal Street is one of New Orleans’ greatest assets and one of the most iconic streets in our country. It has long been a place where commerce, culture, and community come together, and our goal is to ensure it once again reflects the energy and creativity that define our city. This initiative is about bringing City agencies and stakeholders together around a shared vision to invest in infrastructure, improve public safety, strengthen code enforcement, enhance the pedestrian experience, activate retail and cultural spaces, and celebrate the traditions that make New Orleans unlike anywhere else. At the same time, we’re creating the conditions for long-term redevelopment and private investment that will attract businesses, residents, and visitors and help write this corridor’s next chapter. Together, we’re building a Canal Street that every New Orleanian can be proud of,” said Canal Street Renaissance Director Sayde Finkel.
