NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Helena Moreno delivered on a campaign promise to deliver the City’s first splash pad to New Orleans. On Friday, July 24, city leaders, Congressman Troy Carter, and the New Orleans Recreation and Development Commission held a ribbon cutting for the City’s first-ever splash pad, a new, popular amenity to help kids cool off during high temperatures.
The ribbon cutting was held at a park in the Cut Off neighborhood in Algiers. The 2,000 square foot splash pad officially opened 2 weeks ago. It has 30 jets that spray water at visitors and features a large bucket that douses anyone underneath the bucket every 7 minutes.
“Our kids deserve top quality opportunities to have fun and cool off during these hot summer months,” said Mayor Helena Moreno. “This splash pad is only the first of many we will bring online throughout my Administration and is a testament to our reinvestment and reinvention in NORD. Better facilities, more programming, and more opportunities for our young people to thrive.”
The project has been in development since 2020 but faced a series of delays including the COVID-19 pandemic. $926,000 was allotted to fund the splash pad. Of that, $748,000 came from capital outlay funds that Rep. Troy Carter secured for the project. $9,000 in FEMA funds went towards the project and the remaining cost came from bond money.
Another Splash Pad at NORD’s Village de l’Est Playground is also close to completion.
The Cut Off Splash Pad is open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
