NEW ORLEANS – Today, Mayor Helena Moreno joined Congressman Troy Carter, Councilmember Freddie King III, InspireNOLA CEO Jamar McKneely and other community leaders to launch the campaign aimed at improving and revitalizing Morris F.X. Jeff Sr. Stadium for the youth and families of New Orleans.
“Residents in Algiers have a history of feeling unseen, unheard and forgotten,” said Mayor Helena Moreno. “With recent improvements in sanitation, turning on broken streetlights and filling potholes on Tullis Drive, the residents of Algiers are finally seeing and feeling results from their city. My administration hears you, we see you and we’re here to serve you.”
“The youth and families living in Algiers deserve first class services, support and now a first-class football stadium where kids can play safely,” said Councilmember Freddie King III. “This is a promise kept to the people of Algiers to deliver Super Bowl-level services. Kids will literally be able to play on Super Bowl-level turf while enjoying the other major improvements coming to Morris F.X. Jeff Stadium and the Algiers community.”
“I want to thank Mayor Helena Moreno, Councilmember Freddie King, and the City of New Orleans for their dedication to Algiers and for their financial commitment to this important investment in our community. With local, state, and federal support, this capital campaign will ensure that students are able to practice and play safely, giving them an opportunity to pursue their dreams. The revitalization of Morris F.X. Jeff Stadium is a visible reminder of what can happen when we coordinate, collaborate, and invest together in the future of Algiers and all of New Orleans,” said Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (LA-02).
“We are excited to partner with Mayor Moreno, Congressman Carter, and Councilmember King to reimagine what the Morris F.X. Stadium can look like. Through this public-private partnership and private and community funding, our student-athletes can safely compete in the conditions that they deserve,” said InspireNOLA CEO Jamar McKneely.
The initiative is a partnership between the City of New Orleans, and InspireNOLA Charter Schools and seeks to invest in the future of young people by strengthening one of Algiers’ most important athletic and community spaces.
The campaign will be launched with financial support of $100,000 from Councilmember Freddie King III District C bond funds. Friends of InspireNOLA, will supply an additional $500,000 of private funding to begin the project. There’s also an in-kind contribution of perimeter turf left over from Super Bowl LIX hosted in the City of New Orleans. The stadium will continue to serve as the home field for both Edna Karr High School and L.B. Landry High School.
The renovated playing field at Morris F.X. Jeff Stadium has an estimated completion date of August 1, 2026.
