THIBODAUX – A new scholarship at Nicholls State University will celebrate the life of a dedicated nurse and alumna who once led the university’s student nursing organization.
The Jodie Horschel RN Endowed Scholarship was established through a gift from Clayton Horschel to honor his late wife, Jodie Lynd Marsh Horschel, who dedicated more than 20 years of her life to the medical field as a registered nurse.
Beyond her professional commitment to helping others, Horschel was known for her vibrant personality and passion for entertaining others. Her family remembers her as someone who “lit up every room she entered” and loved gifting to others.
“Jodie spent her life looking after people, both in the hospital and in her personal life,” said Clayton Horschel. “Establishing this scholarship ensures that her name remains connected to the profession she loved and provides a helping hand to students following in her footsteps.”
Jodie was president of the Nicholls Association of Student Nurses and graduated with her nursing degree from Nicholls in 2001.
The scholarship is meant to benefit full-time students enrolled in the Thibodaux Regional School of Nursing. To be eligible, applicants can be of any undergraduate classification, freshman through senior, and must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA.
The selection process will be handled by the Nicholls Scholarship Committee, with input from Clayton Horschel and Jodie’s lifelong best friend, Diane Matherne. The scholarship will provide $500 per academic year to the selected recipient, with $250 dispersed in the fall and spring semesters. The award amount may increase as the endowment grows.
The Nicholls Foundation manages this scholarship along with many others that help students succeed. As an endowed scholarship, the money is invested so it can last for years to come. As the fund grows over time, it will be able to help even more nursing students with larger awards. This ensures that Jodie’s memory and her passion for helping others will continue to make a difference in our community for a long time.
