Ursuline Academy Students Participate in United Nations 70th Commission on The Status of Women Conference

Students join global conversation on justice and gender equality

NEW ORLEANS – Ursuline Academy high school juniors recently participated in the 70th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, one of the world’s largest annual gatherings focused on advancing gender equality and the rights of women and girls.

Held March 9–19, 2026, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, the conference brings together global leaders, policymakers, advocates and young voices to discuss challenges and solutions related to women’s empowerment and justice. This year’s session centered on strengthening access to justice for women and girls worldwide and addressing the legal and social barriers that limit equality.

Ursuline Academy juniors Piper Long and Quinn Brannan represented the school as participants in a panel discussion titled Girls’ Voices: Without Us, No Justice.” The session highlighted perspectives from young women around the world and emphasized the importance of including girls in global conversations about justice, equality and leadership.

“This was such an eye-opening and encouraging experience as I was able to hear girls’ perspectives from all over the world regarding their individual fights for justice,” said Ursuline junior Quinn Brannan. “It truly puts into perspective how far we have come as a local community in our fight for justice, as well as how far we still have to go to achieve gender equality all around the world.”

Established in 1946, the Commission on the Status of Women is the principal global intergovernmental body dedicated to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. Each year, representatives from governments and civil society organizations gather to assess progress, share experiences and shape international policies aimed at advancing women’s rights.

By participating in this international forum, Ursuline students engaged with peers and leaders from around the globe while reflecting on the role young women can play in shaping a more just and equitable future.

Ursuline Academy’s participation reflects the school’s commitment to forming young women who lead with courage, compassion, and a global perspective in the spirit of its motto, Serviam: “I will serve.”
