Statement from Urban League of Louisiana President and CEO on The Passing of Dr. Norman C. Francis

NEW ORLEANS — “Today, the Urban League of Louisiana mourns the loss of Dr. Norman C. Francis whose life’s work reshaped not only New Orleans, but the moral and intellectual fabric of our nation.

Dr. Francis believed deeply in the power of education, equity, and service, and he lived those values every single day. Through his historic leadership at Xavier University of Louisiana and his unwavering commitment to civil rights, he opened doors for generations of young people who otherwise may never have seen their potential realized.

Dr. Francis served as an honorary member of the Urban League of Greater New Orleans Board of Directors where his guidance and support helped strengthen the organization. In 2003, the Urban League of Greater New Orleans proudly honored Dr. Francis in recognition of his extraordinary leadership and legacy. His involvement and support of the Urban League in Louisiana and nationally had a tremendous impact and informed and inspired so many of us who carry forward the work of justice and opportunity.

His legacy is inseparable from the progress of Louisiana. We are profoundly grateful for his wisdom, his partnership, and his example.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, his loved ones, and the countless students and leaders who were shaped by his extraordinary life.” — JUDY REESE MORSE
