NEW ORLEANS — Once Carnival season ends, many New Orleans families are left with bags of Mardi Gras beads and throws sitting in closets, garages, or car trunks. While the memories are fun, the overflow can quickly turn into clutter.
Olivia Parks, Nola Organizers, says this happens in homes across the city every year.
“After organizing hundreds of homes throughout New Orleans, Metairie, and the Northshore, we see the same thing each spring, beads stacked in corners that no one plans to use again,” Parks says. “The good news is there are local organizations that gladly accept them.”
Several area nonprofits and recycling programs collect clean, sorted beads and throws to reuse or redistribute. Donating keeps items out of landfills and helps support the local community.
For families who want to keep a small collection, Parks recommends choosing favorites and storing them in one clearly labeled bin, not multiple bags scattered throughout the house.
“Mardi Gras is such a special part of living here,” Parks adds. “You can celebrate fully, and still keep your home feeling manageable after the season ends.”
