City of New Orleans Implements Temporary St. Charles Avenue Lane Closures as Part of Mardi Gras Public Safety Preparations

NEW ORLEANS — As part of ongoing Mardi Gras public safety preparations, the City of New Orleans will temporarily close the left travel lane on St. Charles Avenue to support upcoming security measures.

Beginning Monday, January 5, work will start at St. Charles Avenue and Calliope Street and progress uptown toward Napoleon Avenue. The left travel lane will be closed only in active work areas while crews install concrete security barriers on the median between the streetcar tracks and the curb.

As work progresses, lanes will reopen behind the work zone as each section is completed. Work will continue through completion, weather permitting.

This effort represents one of several measures the City will implement in advance of Mardi Gras to enhance public safety. Installation is being performed by Department of Public Works maintenance crews at the direction of the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) and the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP), in coordination with other City agencies.

For questions, please contact the NOPD Public Information Officer at nopdpio@nola.gov.
