American Cancer Society’s Shuck Cancer Returns for 8th Year

NEW ORLEANSThe American Cancer Society GenNow Network of New Orleans announces the return of New Orleans’ party for a purpose, American Cancer Society Shuck Cancer presented by LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center.  Shuck Cancer will take place on Thursday, Nov. 20, at Champions Square from 7-10 p.m., with an exclusive Patron party happening from 6-7 p.m. The event will showcase oyster varieties from across the country, as well as wine pairings from 20 vineyards, non-oyster cuisine from 30 different restaurants, local brews, a silent auction and live music featuring Blue Earth artists.

“As a co-founder, my motivation is simple: We can’t let logistical barriers stop life-saving care,” said John Michael Rowland, restaurateur and co-founder of Shuck Cancer New Orleans, in a release abut the event. “Every oyster shucked, every donation and every ticket bought translates directly into free rides or a safe room for a patient. We are proud to keep this support local, direct, and growing every year.”

Since its start, Shuck Cancer New Orleans has raised nearly $4M, with the help of honorary “shuckers” that raise a minimum of $5,000 each to benefit the American Cancer Society.  In addition to the efforts of honorary “shuckers,”  the event is also made possible by the generous support of sponsors, including Presenting Sponsor, LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center, Rockefeller sponsors CIS Industries, Mash McClennan and charbroiled sponsors Audubon Facial Plastics, Blanchard & Company, Brechtel Hospitality, Butler Holding Co, Capitol City Produce, Delta Utilities, Duckhorn Vineyards, Eustis Mortgage, First Horizon, iHeart Media, Ochsner MD Anderson Cancer Center, Sysco, Tito’s Handmade Vodka. A full list of this year’s sponsors and honorary “shuckers” can be found at shuckcancer.org.

“Our partnership with Shuck Cancer reflects the strength and compassion of our community,” said Dr. Lucio Miele, director of the LSU LCMC Health Cancer Center. “We are deeply committed to advancing cancer care for everyone in Louisiana. That means going beyond medicine to support the whole person helping patients overcome barriers to care, access nutritious food, and find the emotional and social resources they need throughout their cancer journey.”

Funds raised benefit the Louisiana Access to Care Grant Program, providing transportation and lodging assistance to cancer patients receiving treatment in area health systems. These grants make a direct impact on individuals in Louisiana who are battling cancer by providing them with much-needed transportation to treatment at no cost to them.

The American Cancer Society GenNow Network engages young professionals across the nation in the fight against cancer. These passionate individuals raise funds and awareness by leveraging their personal and professional networks, organizing mission–based activities, and fostering community partnerships.  Previously recognized as Junior Executive Board, GenNow New Orleans is one of 26 American Cancer Society GenNow chapters nationwide.
