NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans Mobility and Safety Team today announced the launch of a Week Without Driving National Initiative to encourage residents to learn to navigate their daily routines without using a car.
Beginning Sept. 29 to Oct. 5, the City of New Orleans Mobility and Safety Team will participate in Week Without Driving, a national initiative aimed at fostering awareness around transportation accessibility and mobility equity. Participants are encouraged to complete their daily routines using alternative forms of transportation such as walking, biking, public transit, or streetcar depending on their needs and surroundings.
Part of a growing movement across the country, Week Without Driving invites elected officials and residents of New Orleans to step into the shoes of those who cannot or do not drive. The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts by the Department of Public Works (DPW) and the Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) to enhance safety for all travelers and reduce car dependency for short trips.
“Week Without Driving is a powerful reminder that safe, reliable, and accessible transportation is essential for everyone in our community,” said Jennifer Ruley, Mobility and Safety Manager. “Here in New Orleans, we’re working to improve access across all modes of travel through safer street designs, expanded bike share options, and more efficient transit operations.”
“Every trip we take without driving helps improve air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” said Greg Nichols, Deputy Chief Resilience Officer. “Week Without Driving is a great way to see how small choices can make a big impact for our health and our city.”
While many choose to drive, it’s important to remember that nearly one-third of Americans are unable to drive due to age, ability, or income. In New Orleans, about one in five households lack access to a personal vehicle. The Week Without Driving initiative offers a new perspective on how the city can become more inclusive and resilient.

Let’s reimagine what mobility can look like for everyone.
