NEW ORLEANS – Today, at the request of the Cantrell Administration, the New Orleans City Council approved the ordinance to create a Municipal ID. The Municipal ID Program is a core initiative of Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s vision for advancing racial, gender, and economic justice in the City of New Orleans.
The program will establish a Municipal ID card to provide residents with an inclusive and accessible form of identification.
“Since my time as a Council Member, I’ve advocated for equitable access and improved quality of life for all residents, especially our most vulnerable community members. As Mayor, this vision is realized through initiatives like the Municipal ID,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “The Municipal ID fosters inclusivity, safety, and unity, ensuring that no one in our city is left behind due to lack of identification. More than just an ID, it’s a key to City services that enhance quality of life, providing access to opportunities and helping people connect with their community, regardless of their race, socioeconomic background, or identity. This is an ID for all New Orleanians.”
“We have been developing the program with ongoing community engagement and input from local advocacy groups and stakeholders,” said Kahlida Lloyd, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Human Rights & Equity. “We are excited for this to be coming to fruition.”
“My office prioritized funding for implementation of this program as identification allows access to virtually every aspect of public life including applying for jobs, public programs, or other services that require identification,” said New Orleans City Council President, Helena Moreno. “This initiative is a critical tool for residents in our city including the unhoused, victims of domestic violence and human trafficking, the formerly incarcerated, and other populations. Access to all resources in New Orleans should be a protected right and a priority for our City government.”
The City will now begin establishing a process to produce and issue the Municipal ID. To learn more about the development of the Municipal ID Program visit: Human Rights and Equity – Home – City of New Orleans.
