Louisiana Abortion Fund Reintroduces Itself with Bayou Road Block Party Celebrating Choice and Community

Advocates and community members to connect at block party featuring a crawfish boil, self care, and family fun

NEW ORLEANS — This Saturday, advocates and community members of all ages will gather at the historic André Cailloux Center on Bayou Road to celebrate the Louisiana Abortion Fund’s (LAAF’s) new chapter. The re-energized fund, formerly known as the New Orleans Abortion Fund, is committed to reproductive justice—the rights of all to determine if or when they will have children and the right to live and raise children in thriving communities.

What: LAAF’s Bayou Block Party
Who: Louisiana Abortion Fund
When: Saturday, May 27 from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m.
Where: André Cailloux Center for Performing Arts and Cultural Justice at 2541 Bayou Rd., New Orleans, LA 70119

“Since the Supreme Court’s decision we’ve had to overcome ever-increasing barriers to abortion care,” said LAAF Executive Director Chasity Wilson. “In the same way that we care for our clients by helping them overcome financial barriers to care, our community has cared for us. This block party is a celebration of that care and a reminder that we all have a place here. The struggle for reproductive justice includes each and every one of us because we all deserve the right to determine if or when to become parents and we all deserve to have our basic needs—things like housing, education, and healthcare—met.”

In celebration of that commitment, LAAF will be joined by community groups including Birthmark Doulas, the Louisiana Coalition on Criminalization and Health, and more.

“The work of the Louisiana Abortion Fund isn’t done in a vacuum. Our role is to help our neighbors across the region overcome the financial barriers erected to prevent them from accessing abortion care,” said LAAF Board of Directors Chair A.J. Haynes. “But we also need folks like Birthmark Doulas to help folks, especially Black pregnant folks and new parents, navigate the birthing process in a state that is infamously treacherous for Black parents-to-be. We need folks like the Reproductive Justice Action Collective to help get folks the information they need to take control of their own reproduction. We need folks like the Louisiana Coalition for Reproductive Freedom demanding policy change. And we need our whole community united as we struggle to make reproductive justice a reality here in the Gulf South.”

About Louisiana Abortion Fund

The Louisiana Abortion Fund (formerly the New Orleans Abortion Fund) is a community fund that assists community members as they overcome the economic and geographic barriers erected to prevent them from accessing abortion care. By providing low-barrier financial support for abortions, plus support for travel and childcare, LAAF invests in the liberation of all Louisianans. LAAF works to center Black people, Indigenous communities, people of color, queer folks, and immigrants, because when society’s most marginalized are free, all be free.
