Reforestation Plan Press Conference to Be Held January 20th by Sustaining Our Urban Landscape

Plan for the comprehensive reforestation of New Orleans announced by local coalition

NEW ORLEANSTwo and a half years in the making, the New Orleans Reforestation Plan will be launched on Friday, January 20, 2023, at a 10:30 press conference hosted at the Sewerage and Water Board of New Orleans’ Green Infrastructure Project on Bayou St., designed by Dana Brown & Associates. Volunteers will be planting 25 Cypress trees for this project during the press conference.

The Reforestation Plan details a comprehensive vision and detailed plan for the restoration of our City’s urban forest. Its multi-faceted rebuilding strategy includes protecting the City’s existing trees as well as ramping up a massive, multi-year replanting effort, especially in those neighborhoods that are the most vulnerable and barren. Coordinated by local nonprofit organization, Sustaining Our Urban Landscape (SOUL), the document reflects the work and extensive input by a dedicated coalition of local government agencies, not-for-profits, citizens, neighborhood associations, academics, urban planners, landscape architecture experts, and other professionals.

The document draws upon satellite data and computer mapping that was commissioned during this process, which informed the Plan’s strategy for reforestation. Numerous speakers will briefly speak to the Plan, including Councilman Eugene Green, Michael Karam-Director of Parks and Parkways, Ghassan Korban-Executive Director of SWBNO, Susannah Burley-Executive Director of SOUL, and Andy Kopplin-CEO of the Greater New Orleans Foundation.
