Best-selling Author Sandra Cisneros to Speak to International School of Louisiana (ISL) 8th Grade Students on April 11th

Students will discuss assigned book The House on Mango Street

NEW ORLEANS —

WHAT: Award-winning author Sandra Cisneros will visit with 8th-grade students at the International School of Louisiana (ISL) to discuss her best-selling book The House on Mango Street. The students were assigned the book to read as part of their Spanish language immersion curriculum. The event is sponsored by the Stone Center for Latin American Studies and the Newcomb Institute.

WHEN: Monday, April 11, 2022
9:30-10:30am

WHERE: International School of Louisiana (ISL) Uptown Campus
1400 Camp St., New Orleans, LA 70130

WHY: Poet, short story writer, novelist, essayist, and performer, Cisneros has earned numerous awards including NEA fellowships in both poetry and fiction, a MacArthur Fellowship, the PEN America Literary Award, and the National Medal of Arts. More recently, she received the Ford Foundation’s Art of Change Fellowship, the Fuller Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature, and the PEN/Nabokov Award for Achievement in International Literature.

Published in 1984, Cisneros’s powerfully intimate story that centered the young Latinx voice and working-class experience of Esperanza Cordero made The House on Mango Street a modern classic that has become an essential coming of age text taught in elementary, high school, and universities across the United States. In her latest publication Martita, I Remember You/Martita te recuerdo, the author again meditates on the lives of women by exploring the transcendental friendships that serve to nourish us throughout our lives despite distance and time. In addition to her writing and other artistic endeavors, Cisneros has fostered the careers of many aspiring and emerging writers as the founder of two non-profit organizations: the Macondo Foundation and the Alfredo Cisneros del Moral Foundation.
