Mayor Cantrell to Participate in U.S. Conference of Mayors Winter Leadership Meeting in Miami This Week

NEW ORLEANS — Today, Mayor LaToya Cantrell traveled to Miami to attend the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) Winter Leadership Meeting where several initiatives and measures will be discussed that will transform the City of New Orleans in the areas of climate and resiliency, infrastructure and public safety.

Mayor Cantrell, a member of the USCM Executive Committee’s Board of Trustees, will meet with mayors from across the nation to discuss ways to improve and move their cities forward post-COVID-19. She will attend sessions ranging from Re-Thinking Downtown Business Districts Post-COVID and the Implementation of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA).

A highlight of the conference will come Saturday, March 5 when Mayor Cantrell and NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson address the conference on police reform initiatives. The recent uptick in violent crime has been felt across the entire country, and part of this conference is designed to bring mayors together to discuss different strategies and solutions aimed at combating this issue.

NOPD has taken several measures to address violent crime, increase public safety and gain the confidence of residents, while continuing to serve as a national model for constitutional policing.

For example, the Cantrell Administration most recently introduced a series of proposals and measures to the New Orleans Civil Service Commission in efforts to retain and recruit more public safety officers. Also, while faced with challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, the City successfully hosted Mardi Gras, which was made possible by the leadership and dedication of Chief Ferguson and the NOPD, who have been relentless in keeping all New Orleans residents and visitors safe.

Mayor Cantrell will return to New Orleans on Sunday, March 6.
