NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans announced that its Resilience Project Design Committee (RDRC) will host a virtual public meeting to review the ninety percent design for the Lakeview/City Park Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP)-funded construction project at 6 p.m. on Thursday, December 9.
The RDRC, which is comprised of representatives from the Office of Resilience and Sustainability, the Department of Public Works, the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans, Parks & Parkways and Capital Projects, is charged with reviewing proposed resilience projects at key milestones during the design process to ensure both coordination and the long-term success of the project.
Members of the public may participate by telephone +1 504-658-8888 (Dial-In Code: 248 100 47371) or join by WebEx: https://nola.webex.com/nola/j.php?MTID=mb1d46c8edfa3f312ca133da032056d4b
The public can also register by emailing roadwork@nola.gov and writing “Lakeview 90 Percent Design” in the subject line.
The $18 million Lakeview/City Park HMGP project will alleviate flooding in the adjacent neighborhoods by enhancing existing lagoons in City Park to store stormwater and relieve pressure on the “gray” drainage system of pumps and pipes. The project calls for diverting stormwater from the drainage system along Robert E. Lee Boulevard into a natural filtration zone in City Park. This design will allow sediment and runoff to be captured before stormwater is released to the City Park lagoons.
The project will be constructed in the lagoons of City Park, north of Interstate-610 to Robert E. Lee Boulevard. While the actual construction will occur in City Park, the Lakeview area will also greatly benefit from reduced flooding during intense rain events. Upon completion, the project will store up to 49 million gallons of stormwater. Design is now underway with construction anticipated to begin in early 2022.
Questions about HMGP or Gentilly Resilience District projects should be directed to 504.658.ROAD (7623) or via email to roadwork@nola.gov. Residents can also sign up for mobile alerts by texting ROADWORK to 77295 and following the link to include your address in your profile or by going to ready.nola.gov/alerts to create a profile and select the “roadwork” alert list option.
