Chef Edgar Caro Updates Status of Restaurants

METAIRIE/NEW ORLEANS — Chef Edgar Caro, who operates four restaurants in the greater New Orleans area, has announced post-Hurricane Ida operating hours for each location.

Baru Bistro & Tapas, located at 3700 Magazine St. in New Orleans, sustained damage in the storm and is not open at this time.

As of Wednesday, Sept. 8, Brasa Churrasqueria, located at 2037 Metairie Rd. in Metairie, is open from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Zócalo, located at 2051 Metairie Rd. in Metairie, will serve diners between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Basin, located at 3222 Magazine Street in New Orleans, will reopen on Friday, Sept. 10 at 11 a.m. with a limited menu.

“We are praying for our city, and we appreciate you for your support,” Caro said in announcing the updated hours.

Caro, New Orleans Magazine’s 2018 Chef of the Year, is a native of Cartagena, Colombia.

Baru Bistro & Tapas, which Chef Edgar Caro opened in 2007 when he was just 24, is located in Uptown New Orleans and serves food based on the culinary traditions of the northern coast of Colombia. The restaurant has been named Best Latin American Restaurant in New Orleans seven years in a row.

Caro opened Basin Seafood & Spirits on Magazine Street in 2013. Caro describes the restaurant as “New Orleans cuisine with Latin flavor.”

Brasa Churrasqueria, with a menu similar to traditional South American steakhouses, opened in 2017 on Metairie Road. Caro uses fresh herbs and vegetables from the restaurant’s own garden in menu offerings, creating a true farm-to-table experience.

Caro and his business partner, Antonio Mata, who is from El Salvador, opened Zócalo Cocina Mexicana & Cantina, also located in Old Metairie, in 2018. In 2019 Zócalo was recognized in Critics’ and People’s Choice categories at Top Taco, New Orleans’ signature taco and cocktails event, and was named a Top Place for Mexican/Southwest in myneworleans.com Tops of the Town.
