NEW ORLEANS – The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) and Jefferson Performing Arts Society (JPAS) announced a new concert experience: The Music of Studio Ghibli, taking place at the Jefferson Performing Arts Center (JPAC) on Oct. 30. The two share that this special collaboration marks an exciting partnership between the LPO and JPAS, bringing the music of legendary Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi to life in a live orchestral performance.
LPO says: Audiences of all ages will be transported into the imaginative worlds of Studio Ghibli’s most iconic films, including “Spirited Away,” “My Neighbor Totoro,” “Howl’s Moving Castle” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service.” With sweeping melodies and emotional depth, Hisaishi’s music has become synonymous with the magic of Studio Ghibli and the visionary storytelling of director Hayao Miyazaki.
The Timeless Sound of Joe Hisaishi
Joe Hisaishi’s music has become synonymous with the magic of Studio Ghibli and the visionary storytelling of director Hayao Miyazaki. Often referred to as “the John Williams of Japan,” it is shared that Hisaishi is celebrated for his unique ability to blend the rich tradition of Western classical orchestration with minimalist techniques and Japanese tonality. His compositions range from grand, powerful themes to simple, emotionally resonant piano motifs that capture the subtle beauty and poignant moments in each film.
“We’re excited to bring this music to the stage in a concert that celebrates the artistry and wonder of Studio Ghibli,” said Anwar Nasir, executive director of the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. “Partnering with Jefferson Performing Arts allows us to connect with even more audiences across the region and share this beloved music in a new and exciting way.”
A Journey Through Iconic Ghibli Worlds
The program will feature music from a diverse range of Studio Ghibli masterpieces, including:
· Spirited Away (2001): The Academy Award-winning fantasy epic following a young girl’s journey into the spirit world, featuring Hisaishi’s memorable and haunting themes.
· My Neighbor Totoro (1988): A joyful, whimsical score that perfectly captures the wonder of two sisters encountering magical forest creatures, an emblem of childhood innocence.
· Howl’s Moving Castle (2004): Known for its iconic, romantic waltz, the music mirrors the film’s blend of high fantasy, steampunk machinery, and wartime drama.
· Kiki’s Delivery Service (1989): An uplifting and cheerful score accompanying a young witch’s charming coming-of-age journey to find independence in a new city.
This concert will be a music-only performance, without film screening, allowing audiences to fully immerse themselves in the live orchestral interpretation of these timeless scores.
