THIBODAUX – The Universities of Louisiana Maritime Academy and the Propeller Club of Port of New Orleans signed a MOU at a reception that established a framework for collaboration between the two for the creation and development of the Maritime Academy at Nicholls State University. The event was sponsored by the New Orleans-Baton Rouge Steamship Pilots Association and the Crescent River Port Pilots Association.
The Universities of Louisiana Maritime Academy is the state-designated maritime academy housed in the University of Louisiana System. ULMA aims to meet the maritime industry’s demands head-on, bolster the maritime workforce and equip students with exposure to opportunities tied to Louisiana’s vast waterways. Through strategic partnerships with Louisiana’s Community and Technical College System and collaboration with maritime training programs, ULMA will open new educational pathways to expand horizons.
ULMA is set to open in fall 2027 and will offer a Bachelors of Science in Marine Transportation while also preparing students to obtain their Third Mate Unlimited Tonnage Merchant Mariner’s license.
