City of New Orleans Announces Cooling Centers Available for Residents to Stay Cool Amid Excessive Heat

NEW ORLEANS — According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the New Orleans area is experiencing dangerously high temperatures early this week. A combination of heat and humidity could lead to daytime high heat index values—or “feels like” temperatures—of 110–115 degrees between Monday, July 28 and Tuesday, July 29.

NOLA READY HEAT RELIEF MAP

The City of New Orleans has launched the NOLA Ready Heat Relief Map, available at: Heat Relief Map / Recursos para aliviar el calor (arcgis.com). This interactive map lists free, indoor, air-conditioned locations open to the general public. Individuals in need of heat relief should check the map for up-to-date cooling center information.

HEAT SAFETY TIPS

Extreme heat can be life-threatening if proper precautions are not taken. Residents are encouraged to check weatherwise.nola.gov for local forecasts before planning any outdoor activities.

To stay safe during extreme heat:

  • Stay indoors in air conditioning during the hottest parts of the day.

  • If you must go outside, do so early in the morning or late in the evening.

  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing.

  • Avoid direct sunlight.

  • Drink plenty of water — don’t wait until you’re thirsty.

  • Be extra cautious if you’re elderly, very young, or have chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease.

  • Check on neighbors, especially seniors and people with medical conditions.

  • Never leave children or pets in a vehicle — even for a few minutes. Interior temperatures can become deadly in as little as 20 minutes. Call 911 if you see a child or pet left unattended in a vehicle.
