Heat Safety Tips

Extreme heat can be life-threatening if proper precautions are not taken. Visit weatherwise.nola.gov for real-time weather updates and alerts.

Residents are advised to:

  • Stay indoors in air-conditioning during peak heat hours.

  • Schedule outdoor activities for early morning or evening.

  • Wear light, loose-fitting clothing.

  • Avoid direct sun exposure.

  • Drink plenty of water — don’t wait until you’re thirsty.

  • Be especially cautious with young children, seniors, and people with chronic medical conditions like diabetes or heart disease.

  • Check on neighbors, elderly residents, and those with medical conditions, especially during power outages.

Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. Even at 70 degrees, a car’s interior can exceed 100 degrees in 20 minutes. Cracking a window does not help. Call 911 if you see a child or pet left alone in a vehicle.
