Home Builders Association of Greater New Orleans Announces Creation of a Wind Mitigation Committee

Goal of the Committee is to Lower Insurance Costs Across Louisiana

NEW ORLEANS — The Home Builders Association of Greater New Orleans (HBAGNO) announces the creation of a Wind Mitigation Committee, formed under the auspices of its Remodelers Council, in conjunction with the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council (LSUCCC). The group seeks to lower insurance costs throughout Louisiana by:

  1. EDUCATING wind mitigation surveyors on correct form data input.
  2. NOTIFYING the public of the benefits of a wind-mitigation survey and code-compliant construction upgrades to their homes.
  3. LIMITING catastrophic exposure of insurance carriers by informing them of the wind-resistant construction and/or upgrades of all homes.
  4. CREATING a searchable public database for resiliently constructed and updated code-compliant homes throughout Louisiana.

The Committee on Wind Mitigation is structured as follows:

  1. Chairperson: An elected chairperson will lead the committee, responsible for overseeing meetings, coordinating activities, and representing the committee externally.
  2. Members: Comprising licensed wind mitigation surveyors who are members of the federation associated with HBAGNO. All wind-mitigation licensees in the state of Louisiana are eligible for membership.
  3. Contributors: Participants in the residential housing industry, public and private, as well as non-profit and governmental agencies with a mission related to residential housing specifically in Louisiana.
  4. Subcommittees: Establish subcommittees focused on specific areas such as education, advocacy, and outreach to efficiently address different aspects of the committee’s objective.
  5. Meetings: Regular meetings will be held to discuss ongoing initiatives, share updates, and plan future activities. Virtual meetings will be facilitated to accommodate members from different parts of the state.

Committee participation will be extended to all licensed wind mitigation surveyors in the state of Louisiana as well as LSUCCC staff and other governmental or non-profit staff as identified by the Committee Chair and approved by the Remodelers Chair. Committee leadership and all other participants must be members of the Louisiana Home Builders Association through a local membership. The committee will also utilize the list of licensed wind mitigation surveyors maintained by the State, which includes contact information for potential new members.

According to Dan Mills, CEO of the HBAGNO, “With storms becoming stronger and more frequent, the Wind Mitigation Committee is poised to play a crucial role in advancing the interests of licensed wind mitigation surveyors, ensuring the safety and resilience of residential structures in the face of wind-related challenges. Through collaboration, advocacy, and education, this committee will contribute to the greater good of the community and existing Louisiana homeowners.”
