Operation Restoration Commemorates Juneteenth with Service Day

Staff conducting voter registration drive, serving free food

NEW ORLEANS — The staff at Operation Restoration (OR), a New Orleans-based organization founded to support justice-impacted women and girls, celebrates Juneteenth with a day of service to the community. This year, the staff and volunteers will register people to vote, serve food and distribute clothing to the community on Friday, June 14 from 11 a.m.–3 p.m. at PotBelly NOLA, 2908 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.

Juneteenth marks the celebration of freedom, commemorating the day when the last slaves in the United States were set free on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, TX. Despite the abolition of slavery, more than three years prior, nearly 250,000 individuals remained in bondage.

Along with the voter registration drive, free food, drinks and clothing, the Justice and Accountability Center will be onsite to provide pro bono legal services, including notaries and  information about expungements. A number of other area nonprofits are participating in a resource fair.

Community partners for the event include PotBelly, Black Voters Matter Fund, Natasha the Realtor, Engaging New Voices and Voters (ENVV), Grounds Krewe, Louisiana Abortion Fund, Louisiana Coalition on Criminalization & Health, The First 72 and Familias Unidas en Accion.
