Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra Launches New Season with Opening Night Concert

NEW ORLEANS – The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, the region’s premier and GRAMMY Award-winning orchestra, kicks off its 34th season with a grand opening night performance of SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE on Thursday, Sept. 12, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Orpheum Theater. Entering his second season at the helm, LPO Music Director Matthew Kraemer takes his place at the podium to lead an exhilarating performance featuring an LPO Premiere of Louisiana State University (LSU) professor Brian Raphael Nabor’s Pulse and two beloved French compositions – Paul Dukas’ enchanting The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Hector Berlioz’s emotion-filled Symphonie Fantastique. For more information, visit www.lpomusic.com.

A NIGHT OF MUSICAL BRILLIANCE

The programmed works for LPO’s 2024/25 Opening Night concert of SYMPHONIE FANTASTIQUE encapsulate exceptional talent and versatility of orchestral composers and conductors, both past and present. The evening begins with LSU professor Brian Raphael Nabors’ Pulse – a vibrant orchestral work that expressively explores various phases of rhythm while maintaining the work’s musical heartbeat.

The evening continues with Paul Dukas’ most famous work, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice. This symphonic poem is widely known for its vivid orchestration and storytelling and gained even greater fame after being featured in Disney’s 1940 film, “Fantasia.”

The program concludes with Hector Berlioz’s influential and emotion-filled work, Symphonie Fantastique. With its dramatic contrasts and striking melodies, this work pioneered radical symphonic orchestration in the Romantic era – thus remaining a cornerstone piece in orchestral repertoire and celebrated for its groundbreaking approach to musical storytelling.
