Mister Mao and Liberty’s Kitchen Collaborate Empower New Orleans’ Youth

NEW ORLEANS – Liberty’s Kitchen welcomed a gathering of local foodies and community supporters for a memorable evening on March 27, featuring the exceptional talents of Sophina Uong, executive chef/co-owner of Mister Mao. Hosted at Liberty’s Kitchen’s café, the event spotlighted the collaborative efforts of Chef Uong and the program’s trainees and alumni assisted by the 2024 Aaron Sanchez Impact Fund scholarship recipients.

The sold-out event was attended by 52 guests whose generosity contributed to raising $6,000 for Liberty’s Kitchen’s Youth Development Program. This 12-week workforce intensive equips New Orleans’ youth with vital occupational skills and wraparound support to foster their personal and professional growth.

Chef Uong’s menu for the evening was a celebration of creativity and culinary innovation. The dinner commenced with a starter of Louisiana strawberries, accompanied by charred dates, sheep’s milk feta, and a flavorful collard green chermoula, setting a high standard for the courses to follow. The main course featured turmeric and curry leaf roast chicken alongside a Dhaba style egg Masala curry, perfectly paired with garlic flatbread, serrano yogurt, and tamarind chutney. The meal concluded on a high note with a dessert of tropical fruits including pandan tapioca, chia, jackfruit, lychee, and pineapple. Along with assisting in the front and back of house, alumni shared heartfelt stories of how the opportunities and support provided by Liberty’s Kitchen helped shape their lives.

“Tonight’s gathering was not only a celebration of culinary excellence and community, but also a powerful learning experience for our trainees and alumni,” reflected Bernadette Lucas, executive director of Liberty’s Kitchen. “The opportunity to work alongside Chef Sophina Uong provided valuable lessons in craftsmanship and creativity. The support from our community tonight ensures that young people can continue to access transformative opportunities and mentorship at Liberty’s Kitchen.”

The success of the evening was made possible by the generous support of event sponsors JV Foods, Inland Seafood, St. James Cheese Company, Capitol City Produce, and Sysco New Orleans.
