NEW ORLEANS – With Memorial Day and the unofficial start of summer just days away, it is fitting that one of summer’s most iconic foods has its own day to kick off the holiday weekend. National Hamburger Day on Friday, May 28, celebrates burgers dressed—or undressed—any way you like.
The New Orleans Marriott’s newest culinary option, the Canal Street Burger Bar, also has another reason to celebrate. The walk-up burger bar first opened in March 2020 and had to close immediately due to the pandemic. In mid-April, the Canal Street Burger Bar reopened its doors, offering some of the best, mouthwatering burgers for customers to enjoy before an afternoon of sightseeing, a night in the French Quarter or any time in between.
The juicy, classic burgers and cheeseburgers are made from premium, high-quality Black Angus beef sourced from 1855 farms, a legacy that started more than 150 years ago by Gustavus F. Swift in Nebraska. In addition to the burgers, the Canal Street Burger Bar’s menu includes cheeseburgers, a “Beyond” veggie burger, chicken tenders, spicy fried chicken sandwich, coleslaw, fries and onion rings. Diners may also want to try a frozen Hurricane or draft beer to quench their summer thirsts.
While claims as to where and who invented the hamburger are as varied as ways to serve America’s favorite sandwich, most burger historians agree that it gained widespread popularity at the 1904 World’s Fair. More than a century later, Americans consume more than 50 billion burgers each year. At the Burger Bar, Chef Thorsten Leighty prefers dressing it with old-school toppings—cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. The rest, he says, speaks for itself.
Canal Street Burger Bar is open Thursday through Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
