Brasa to Host Wine Dinner Series This Fall

NEW ORLEANS – Chef Edgar Caro and partner Antonio Mata of the Caro Mata Group have announced a special Wine Dinner Series at Brasa South American Steakhouse in Downtown New Orleans. Set in the newly renovated space, which feels like a romantic South American locale, each dinner will feature a curated multi-course menu expertly paired with unique and award-winning wines. The first dinner is set for Aug. 14 at 6:30 p.m.

“We are thrilled to host some of the top wine producers from around the world at our flagship restaurant in the heart of downtown,” said Chef Caro. “Each menu will incorporate the finest quality Angus in the market and local seafood and reflect South America’s culinary approach and style.”

In August, guests will be welcomed with sparkling prosecco and melão soup, a chilled summer melon soup with crispy lomo salami, mint, and Suero tapioca pearls. The first course is a palmito salad with hearts of palm, cherries, and avocado paired with Viña Cobos Felino Chardonnay from Mendoza, Argentina. The second course, Coxinha de Frango, is chicken croquette with requeijão, mojo verde, and chicken skin migas served with Yacoubian – Hobbs Areni Noir Red Blend 2018, produced in Vayots Dzor, Armenia. The third course, Pao e Queijo Beef Tartare, Brazilian Yuca Cheese Bread with Teres Major, Parmegiano Reggiano and burnt onion emulsion paired with Crocus & Atelier Malbec de Cahors from France. The beef course of Picanha Defumada is smoked coulotte with feijoada, bacon farofa, crispy kale, and chimichurri gaucho paired with Viña Cobos Cocodrilo Red Blend 2017 from Mendoza. The final course of Dark Chocolate Brigadeiros with espresso buttercream and raspberry coulis is served with a porto.

On Sept. 26, Brasa hosts Catena Zapata and its winemaker Ernesto “Nesti” Bajda from Mendoza, Argentina. This winery boasts South America’s vineyard with the most perfect scores from Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate and other leading international critics. Bodega Chacra, located in the Rio Negro Valley of northern Patagonia, 620 miles south of Buenos Aires, will join Brasa on Oct. 16 for the next dinner in the series. Chacra, known for its pinot noirs and recently garnering Wine of the Year by JamesSuckling.com, has added chardonnay to its production. Chilean wine Lapostolle will join Brasa on Nov. 13 for the fourth dinner in the wine series. Lapostolle wines are crafted using French expertise with the terroirs of Chile.

The final dinner in the fall series is a holiday celebration with Opus One. Opus One is a product of two families who share a passion for wine and a desire to explore new possibilities, not unlike Chef Caro’s and Antonio Mata’s passion for blending two cultures—South America and South Louisiana. This final dinner will take place on Dec. 18.

Brasa Downtown is the second Brasa location for the Caro Mata Group, which also owns Brasa and Zocalo in Old Metairie and Basin Seafood on Magazine Street. Chef Caro also owns Baru on Magazine Street. The first Brasa location earned the title of Best Steakhouse in New Orleans by New Orleans Magazine and garnered Caro the Chef of the Year honor.

Brasa South American Steakhouse is open Sunday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.
