NEW ORLEANS – Join the UNCF (United Negro College Fund) Walk for Education® to help raise funds for students of color across Louisiana who are trying to get to, and through, college.
The event, which engages businesses leaders, organizations, families, and individuals who are all committed to supporting our local scholars, is set for Saturday, October 22, at 8:30 a.m. This year’s festivities will take place at the University of Louisiana and along Lakeshore Drive with a beautiful view of the New Orleans’ lakefront.
Make a difference—walking, running, cycling—all in honor of UNCF, our students and schools. This annual event is now in-person after going virtual the past two years because of COVID-19 and is hosted by UNCF local offices each spring, summer or fall. The UNCF Walk for Education® raises funds nationally and locally to support historically Black colleges and universities, including UNCF-members Dillard University and Xavier University of Louisiana and the students they serve through the help of individuals, corporations, and other group donors.
The 2022 New Orleans’ UNCF Walk for Education will be chaired by Roy A. Glapion, P.E., vice president of the Beta Group; along with Fannie Marcotte-Bennett, director of client services at Digital Engineering & Imaging, Inc., serving as vice chair. This year’s local presenting sponsors are WWL-TV (Channel 4) and the University of New Orleans. Local master’s sponsors include Shell and Wells Fargo Bank. The WWL-TV (Channel 4) morning news team will serve as hosts.
“During our 78 years and despite heavy odds, UNCF has continued to move the needle for HBCUs and students of colors, fueling their progress,” said Dr. Michael L. Lomax, president and CEO, UNCF. “Throughout the last two years, we have seen an enormity of racial division and strife, which has been compounded for our students by the COVID-19 pandemic. We continue to find ourselves at a crossroads where the need of our students and the demand on our member HBCUs is larger than ever before. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again—we are at risk of washing away a generation of talented and deserving African American and minority students. Donations are urgently needed to ensure our next generation of American leaders get to college, succeed and graduate. We invite everyone to register and join our Walk for Education to help ensure better futures for us all.”
