Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority + City of New Orleans to Host Irish Bayou Living Shoreline Community Meeting

NEW ORLEANS — The Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA), with community engagement support from the City of New Orleans, is advancing the design of a living shoreline along Irish Bayou with funding from the National Coastal Resilience Fund.

Located in northeast Orleans Parish adjacent to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, the project will create a natural storm surge buffer for the communities of New Orleans East and Irish Bayou, while affording protection to critical infrastructure such as Interstate 10, U.S. Highway 11, and two Class I rail lines.

The living shoreline will also aim to reduce wave impacts, slow vegetation loss, trap and retain sediment, and create habitat that supports local fish and wildlife.

WHAT:  CPRA will host a public meeting to present the proposed project design, answer questions, and collect feedback from the community. The City’s Office of Resilience & Sustainability will provide additional community engagement support, including an online survey for those unable to attend.

WHEN:  Monday, Aug. 11@ 5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m.

WHERE:  Joe Brown Park, 5601 Read Blvd., New Orleans East

Please RSVP for this meeting at https://nola.gov/resilience.

If you cannot attend in person, we encourage you to share your feedback through the online survey, which will remain open until Monday, Aug. 18 at 5 p.m.
