Jefferson Parish Announces Bicentennial Celebration for 2025

JEFFERSON — Jefferson Parish’s year-long celebration of the Bicentennial will kick off in 200 days, on February 11, 2025. In preparation for the Jefferson Parish Bicentennial, the community is invited to visit www.JeffParish.gov/JP200 to download the official logo and add events to the community calendar.

“We are very excited about our Bicentennial in 2025. Our Jefferson Parish councilmembers and many members of our community have been working on next year’s Bicentennial, and we are encouraging the entire community to join us as we recognize our rich 200-year history and celebrate all Jefferson Parish has to offer,” said Jefferson Parish President Cynthia Lee Sheng. “This year-long celebration is everyone’s party and we want all members of the public to feel like they are a part of this. Individuals and organizations are encouraged to get involved in the celebration and commemoration by incorporating the Bicentennial theme into their own events, services and products. It is our hope that the Bicentennial will encourage more support of local businesses and help our economy.”

Planning is currently underway for the Bicentennial, to include a variety of community events, local initiatives and new projects that instill a sense of pride for Jefferson Parish. Members of the public, civic leaders, business owners, churches, schools, nonprofits and community organizations are encouraged to be a part of this special anniversary by spearheading their own events, activities and programming. All are invited to add relevant dates to the Bicentennial Community Calendar to commemorate Jefferson Parish’s past, present and future. The calendar will include a full list of events throughout the year, including special events in Jefferson Parish, as well as significant anniversaries to remember.

The Jefferson Parish Bicentennial logo is available to download for members of the public and businesses to use on their websites, marketing materials, and/or social media to show support and involvement. All are encouraged to use the hashtag #JP200 when posting social media content about the Bicentennial. For more information about the Jefferson Parish Bicentennial, visit www.JeffParish.Gov/JP200.

About Jefferson Parish:
Jefferson Parish, Louisiana was established by the Louisiana Legislature on February 11, 1825 and was named in honor of Thomas Jefferson, commemorating his role in purchasing the Louisiana territory from France in 1803. The settlement of Jefferson Parish dates back to the 1600’s, as seen in excavations within the boundaries of the Barataria Preserve of Jean Lafitte’s National Park. Jefferson Parish originally extended from present day Felicity Street in New Orleans, Louisiana to the St. Charles Parish line. As Orleans Parish grew, it annexed from Jefferson Parish. Jefferson Parish now stretches from the south shore of Lake Pontchartrain to the Gulf of Mexico at Grand Isle. The Cities of Gretna, Harahan, Kenner, and Westwego; and the Towns of Grand Isle and Jean Lafitte are located within Jefferson Parish. The present boundary was set in 1874 and the seat of Parish government was transferred to the West Bank in Gretna where it has remained.
