NEW ORLEANS – Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) is thrilled to introduce Louisiana’s first bachelor’s degree in data science, an innovative program designed to meet the growing need for skilled professionals who can analyze and transform complex data into actionable insights across various industries. This program marks a pivotal step forward in preparing students for dynamic and high-demand careers.
“This program will empower students with cutting-edge skills to excel and lead in any industry,” said Chancellor James Ammons, Jr. “It will serve as a transformative milestone for Louisiana, laying the foundation for the future of technology education. As the first program of its kind in the state, it will empower students to become trailblazers in data science, equipping them with the skills and confidence to shape industries and redefine possibilities. By fostering innovation and championing diversity, it will open doors to unparalleled opportunities and set a new standard for educational excellence.”
The Data Science program emphasizes hands-on, project-based learning, allowing students to gain real-world experience as they prepare for impactful roles such as management analysts, market researchers, data analysts, and operations researchers. These options eliminate traditional education barriers, offering students the convenience of learning from anywhere while reducing costs associated with commuting, housing, and transportation. Furthermore, the program will leverage open educational resources, replacing expensive textbooks and reducing financial burdens on students.
Key features of the program include:
- Strategic partnerships with organizations will provide students with valuable internships and clear pathways to employment in high-stakes, data-driven environments.
- Alignment with Louisiana’s workforce strategies to meet demands in critical industries such as healthcare, energy, finance, government, and information technology, ensuring graduates are equipped to address real-world challenges.
- A curriculum carefully developed in collaboration with alumni, community leaders, and industry representatives to foster equity, accessibility, and practical expertise in data-driven decision-making.
