Drop by the New Canal Lighthouse on select Fridays through August to learn more about Louisiana’s lush ecosystems, the power of rainwater and the hidden world of insects

NEW ORLEANS — Beginning June 16, Pontchartrain Conservancy will host a new mini-camp series at the New Canal Lighthouse, on select Fridays through August 18. Young learners will have the opportunity to discover and learn about Louisiana’s lush ecosystems, the power of rainwater and the hidden world of insects above and below the water. Each mini camp will last from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and cost $20 per camper.

We are thrilled to be able to offer mini camps this summer at the Lighthouse,” said Kristi Trail, executive director of Pontchartrain Conservancy. “The diversity of topics and camper age range, makes this mini camp a great way to teach kids that science can be fun, and that learning doesn’t have to stop just because school is out for the summer.”

The three mini camps that Pontchartrain Conservancy is offering include:

  • Bayous, Marshes and Swamps, OH MY! – Exploring the lush ecosystems of southern Louisiana

This educational experience is designed to introduce students to the seven unique ecosystems found within the Pontchartrain Basin and provide them with hands-on opportunities, including building a model, using Augmented Reality and underwater cameras to explore and understand the importance of this vibrant region.

  • Rain Garden Discoveries – Exploring nature’s water solutions

Discover how beautiful native flowers and plants can help manage rainwater runoff and promote water conservation. Learn about green infrastructure techniques like bioswales and rain gardens and how they can help low lying cities, such as New Orleans. Get ready to embark on a hands-on journey at the Lighthouse’s enchanting native plant garden, where campers will create a personal plant book to cherish and take home.

  • Bugging Out – An exploration of bugs above and below the water

Embark on a captivating journey through bayous, lakes and estuaries, as we investigate the hidden world of the insects who live at the water’s edge and learn to use them to measure the ecosystem’s well-being.
