NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell today was joined by Sen. James “Jimmy” Harris III, along with Lisa Alexis, Director of the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy (OCE), to announce the allocation of $150,000 to New Orleans Social Aid & Pleasure Clubs for the 2024 Second Line Parade Season.
OCE will serve as the sponsoring organization and provide support in disbursing the funds, as defined by the executed Cooperative Endeavor Agreement (CEA) between the City of New Orleans and the Louisiana Department of Treasury. The larger agreement outlines the use of one-time state funding to support the implementation of projects relevant to economic development, youth and families, cultural economy, mental health, and criminal justice coordination in New Orleans.
“I am proud to announce that, in collaboration with the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy and Sen. Jimmy Harris, this administration is reinvesting into the vibrant culture of the great City of New Orleans,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “Being able to support those who not only contribute to our city’s vibrant culture but also work tirelessly to preserve its rich heritage is simply unmatched. Funds previously allocated to marketing efforts are now fueling the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund, fostering the growth and sustainability of our cultural endeavors.”
Through the CEA, Sen. Harris III has contributed $150,000 in funds that will be utilized to ensure public safety police escorts through the Office of Police Secondary Employment (OPSE) and cover costs of all necessary permits and/or licenses submitted to the Department of Safety & Permits.
Such funding opportunities are key to continue strengthening and investing in the local arts and culture ecosystem while keeping the traditional heritage alive in New Orleans.
“Expressing gratitude for the rich cultural contributions the social aid and pleasure clubs have made to our city over the years is truly beyond words. We feel privileged to reciprocate by now investing them,” said Alexis.
The mission of OCE is to stimulate economic activity and growth in our local cultural sectors by creating opportunities for arts and creative producers to thrive, leading initiatives, curating events, forging partnerships and connecting to the community in all areas of the cultural economy.
