NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today announced that MovieMaker Magazine, a film industry trade magazine, has named New Orleans the No. 1 Best Small City to Live and Work as a Moviemaker. The magazine honored New Orleans in their January 2021 issue that ranks big and small cities as the Best Place to Live and Work as a Moviemaker in 2021.
“We are so excited that New Orleans has been named MovieMaker Magazine’s No. 1 Small City to Live and Work as a Filmmaker in 2021,” said Carroll Morton, Director of Film New Orleans. “As the most culturally authentic city in America, both independent filmmakers and major film and TV projects are attracted to the city’s creativity, welcoming spirit and a growing film industry infrastructure.”
The magazine is widely distributed during the Sundance Film Festival that began on Jan. 28 and lasts until Feb. 2, and the rankings issue is widely read by the industry. The ranking is supported by the successful return of filming in the city, which is currently only one of two cities that have consistently allowed filming in the U.S. since the summer. New Orleans continues to hold the position of the fourth-largest production hub in the United States. The film industry is to abide by strict COVID-19 prevention guidelines to keep filmmakers and their crews safe.
Equipment rentals and production facilities abound, and New Orleans brought in $475 million in 2020, plus an additional 15% for local labor. New Orleans is home to several great film festivals and naturally a great place to host filming as well as filmmakers and their crews.
