NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Recreation Development (NORD) Commission is proud to celebrate Keith Duncan, a dedicated NORD Commission art instructor. Duncan’s work is featured in the Battle of the Bands exhibition at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art. He has been teaching at NORD for five years and is an accomplished artist and educator who brings creativity and inspiration to the community through his classes in watercolor, painting, drawing, and ceramics, as well as his contributions to NORD’s summer camp programs for children.
The Battle of the Bands exhibition is currently on showcase until Aug.10, which displays Duncan’s latest series of large-scale fabric paintings, celebrating the vibrant tradition of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) marching bands. His work highlights the artistic, cultural, and historical significance of these performances, capturing the energy, movement, and pride that define the HBCU band experience.
“NORD is incredibly proud to have someone as talented and committed as Keith Duncan on our team,” said Larry Barabino, Jr., CEO of the NORD Commission. “His impact on our community extends beyond the classroom. He nurtures artists of all ages while also making powerful artistic contributions that celebrate black culture and southern traditions. Seeing his work recognized at the Ogden Museum is a testament to his dedication and artistic excellence.”
Duncan’s unique approach integrates textiles, painting, and storytelling drawings from African heritage, Southern folk art, and contemporary aesthetics. His work not only honors the legacy of HBCU marching bands but also fosters conversations about the cultural significance of these institutions in American history.
As Duncan continues to shape the next generation of artists at NORD, his recognition at the Ogden Museum serves as an inspiration to his students and the broader New Orleans community. We invite everyone to experience his remarkable work and join us in celebrating this achievement.
